Some Guidance for Filing a Claim for Property Damage
At the minimum, include these steps when preparing your insurance claim. Seek advice for your circumstances from a competent insurance loss professional.
- Mitigate your damages -- take steps to protect the property from further damage.
- Document your mitigation expenses and the steps you took
- Seek advice from your insurance agent or other insurance loss professional
- Find your insurance policy.

- Call your insurance company and your agent, and notify them of your claim
- Take pictures of the damaged areas as soon as possible. Some
suggestions for contents damage photos
are available, and may apply to damage to structural and other property damage.
- Get a note pad and:
- Write down comments on damages you can't photograph.
- If you have questions or other particular concerns, write them down
- If you receive direction or instructions from your insurance agent, the insurance company, or your adjuster, write them down, along who you talked with, and when.
- Cooperate with your insurance company and the assigned adjuster
- Consider the benefits of seeking help with your claim.
